Discovering more about yourself, the World and the Universe through stories

Our State of Being – Pt 1

"The more I live in a false way, the more distant I become from my true self" - Judith Pemell

How did we get here?

Following on from the introductory blog, we considered why many of us today are seeking answers and wanting to learn more about ourselves.

In a time when we have so much available to us, why do so many of us feel lost, dissatisfied and lacking in purpose?
This human desire to learn more about ourselves isn’t a new phenomenon – it’s been around for as long as we have.

Now, with both our inner and outer worlds in more apparent turmoil, seeking more to life has become more mainstream. Particularly post-pandemic, many of us were forced to spend time alone with ourselves for long periods. This forced us to ask questions of ourselves we hadn’t considered previously.

Like – “Why is it that we can’t achieve common states of being such as of happiness, joy, and peace 24/7?” “Is life really meant to be a struggle?” Or, “What’s the point of my life?

If you or someone you know has asked these types of questions, you’re ready to take the next step. For sure, there will be inner work to be done, concepts to be understood and actions to implement. Yet, it’s an amazing journey and one that will propel you into higher states of consciousness and awareness. It will open your world up to new possibilities.

But first – to understand why we even need to embark on a journey of self-discovery, we must look back. Back to the time of our birth, our family structure and society we were born into.

We were always perfect

[Note here – babies born with physical challenges and illnesses have their own unique path which will be discussed in a future blog regarding Soul Contracts].

Pre-birth, when a soul decides to incarnate as a human, it holds all the knowledge of its purpose. It knows the lessons it wants to focus on; its main purpose and goal and its inherent traits and abilities. As well, it recognises the family tribe is; major relationships; even the time and date of its passing back into source.

Unfortunately for us, when we’re born, our memory is wiped, and we recall very little if any of it. Some may ask why this is the case but think of it this way – “What good would the game be if you knew all the rules and moves from the beginning? There wouldn’t be much point to playing in the first place.

Transition time

Remember – our soul wants to learn and experience life in order that it may expand. It needs to bring with it challenges and purpose to advance its own consciousness. It will depend upon the individual as to how much of their soul self will be tapped into over a lifetime.

But not everything is forgotten straight away. The process takes time and differs for everyone.

When a newborn makes its entrance, and for several years after, it retains a strong connection with source.

This connection can be physically evidenced in various ways. For parents of babies and young children,  they may experience conversations with “imaginary” friends, see entities and beings the rest of us can’t. They may demonstrate a strong connection to animals and/or nature. Or even possess memories or recount stories of events they can have no recollection of.

Many parents or carers are unaware of this soul connection. This is not an indictment on their parenting but generally a reflection of their own upbringing and beliefs. Parents who are spiritually attuned are more likely to encourage their child’s natural affinities with source. These may remain steadfast as they grow and mature. These are often the psychics, mediums and channelers of the world.

Some spiritualists believe the soul connection is strong for the first few years of life and can continue for longer if encouraged. Usually, as a child integrates more into society, the connection dims. This is also around the age that modern psychologists believe the human personality is established. (see report)

It can be said that we lose our soul identity and begin to identify through our mind and physicality instead. We begin to develop the false self.

One could argue then that the further it is we deviate from our natural source connection, the harder it is to maintain our soul nature. We begin down a road of disconnect that some may never realign with, and others spend many years attempting to restore.

So, “how do we get so off track?

Let’s consider the process of our individual evolution from birth as a starting point.

Integrating into the Tribe

Every baby is born into what is known as its designated “tribe” or “soul group”. This typically consists of one or more parents, carers, siblings, grandparents, and other integral relationships. Each of those individuals has their own soul journey, purpose, and karma to experience which the baby will no doubt encounter.

As a baby becomes more attuned to these people and its surrounds, it will inevitably be influenced by their beliefs, attitudes, morals, prejudices and more. There is a whole gamut of human traits the child has no way of filtering. We live in a world of vibration and energy (future blog). A baby is keenly aware of this and able to “pick-up” on what it is that is going on around it.

As well, the baby’s own interaction with source and the connection it has goes generally unrecognised by those closest to it.

Early Beginnings

Far from its basic requirement to be fed, kept warm and safe, the baby lives in its own world of bliss interspersed with snippets of the humans around it. Judith Pemell, author of “The Soul Illuminated” notes, “Babies do not care about social conditioning or how others think they should behave. So innocent, free and natural are they that it is easy to appreciate the beauty of an unblemished soul.

As the baby/toddler ages, it recognises it’s part of a structure into which it needs to find its place. Its sense of personality begins to form. Later, it will become further indoctrinated into the social system of pre-school and primary school. This will introduce it to an even greater array of individuals and authority figures.

These new influences add another layer of interactions that impact the child’s sense of self and the world around them.

But the resultant personality is not necessarily a reflection of who we are on a soul level.

We’ve been pushed off course, so to speak, by humans who themselves have grown up under the very same system.

Introducing the Ego

At the baby and toddler stage of life, we see ourselves as the centre of the Universe. Everything revolves around whether our needs are met, and that’s it. There is no perception of ourselves as individuals with bodies, minds, feelings and emotions – that all comes later.

Once again, from Pemell’s book “The Soul Illuminated”,

When a human being is born the soul is in an emerged state. The innocence and purity of an infant reveals the natural state of the soul. Babies do not relate through the adaptation of personality, because they have not formed any ego defences or ego identity. In a world lacking spiritual vision and soul awareness, an infant will not grow up with reminders of its spiritual nature. As a child grows and experiences little rejections and hurts, he or she gradually forms layers of resistance to avoid feeling the pain and disappointments that are a part of growing up in our world. Thus, the ego or personality begins to form as layers of “protection” around the soul early in life.

In due course, the child learns the concept of separation – there is a “me” and a “you” or “them”.

Of course, we need the ego as a basic too of self-preservation and survival. It is what keeps us safe, has us making decisions in our best interests to not get taken by the lion or tiger while we’re sleeping.

Gabriel Mate in his book “The Myth of Normal”, offers his description – “A healthy ego – not in the sense of superiority, but as in a stable identity, the ground of self-respect, self-regulation, capacity for good decision making, a working memory and more – is a vital asset of a thriving human being.

That little voice in our head

But at some point, the Ego begins to take on a life of its own. As we are bombarded with our interactions with other humans, and our mind begins to process what is going on around us, we can’t help but take on a “It’s me against the world” mentality with the Ego front and centre of this dynamic.

Pemell states further, “The soul aware state is so pure and uncontaminated, that in soul consciousness, it is not possible to experience negativity or to project alienated parts of the personality onto others. So why is it that, instead of experiencing myself in this way, I experience anxiety, negative thinking patterns, anger, jealousy, and depression? The reason is that I forget I am a soul, I believe I am a body. In this way, I begin to become separated from my true identity… This separation of self forms a layer of pain, loss, and confusion at the core of my personality. The moment I lose my soul aware consciousness, the Ego takes over. Ego is a kind of constructed self that tries to mimic the true self. … Ego is another term for personality.”

Personally, I believe that Pemell beautifully and simply defines what happens to us on a soul level. She offers an explanation as to why so many of us are searching and asking questions.

We’re looking for ourselves in our purest state. We are trying to reclaim our connection to source in order to fulfil our potential and live as we were truly meant to.

Coming up...

in Part 2, we’ll look at a child’s development as it journeys through the education system and into early adulthood. We’ll explore how most of western society has adopted a system that no longer serves us on a human, spiritual and universal level.

And we’ll consider options as to why now it’s more important than at any other time to get back on track and rediscover our soul selves.

Until next time – know that you’re amazing just as you are!
